Caramelized Onions

For my inaugural post here on Butter and Onions, I decided go to with a recipe that can be made with only these two title ingredients.  Together, they turn into something totally different and can bring so many dishes to another level of deliciousness that you will start wanting to add them to everything.

Recipe: Caramelized Onions


3 tablespoons butter

One large onion (I use red, mostly for the color)


Melt butter in a 10-inch skillet on medium heat.  While butter is melting, slice the onion in half, root to tip. Cut off the ends, and slice into 1/4 inch half circle slices. Put the onion in the pan and coat evenly with butter.  Stir occasionally, about every 1-2 minutes, making sure not to let them burn. Keep stirring occasionally until they have become brown and sticky looking, but not burned. Remove from heat and put them on a pizza, a burger, or eat them straight out of the pan!  Stay tuned for the next post to see how I use these beauties. (Yields slightly less than one cup so go ahead and double the recipe if you want/need more.)

Oooh, I LOVE caramelized onions. What a fabulous first post! Caramelized onions play a prominent role in a lot of Arabic food, although they tend to cook the onions in oil (olive or vegetable, depending upon the country and the dish) rather than butter.

Mm, YUM! Carmelized red onions were a turning point for me about two years ago. Prior to that I hated onions, and finally got around to trying them carmelized (with a bit of brown sugar, according to that recipe) and hallelujia, I’ve been converted! 28 years wasted by not enjoying onions. What a shame!

Hooray for your new blog! Just wanted to add that onions AND mushrooms is also very delicious on so many things. But I really like mushrooms and I know a lot of people don’t.
